“The execution of Lady Jane Grey” is a work by the French painter Paul Delaroche, who was very popular in the 19th century and specialized in historical paintings.

It captures the essence and tragedy of Lady Jane Grey, the young queen who was beheaded at the Tower of London at the age of 16. Her condemnation came after she was placed at the heart of a political struggle catalyzed by Queen Mary Tudor.

Her political rise was supported by Protestant figures who wished to place her at the head of the country in order to preserve Protestantism against Queen Mary I, who eventually succeeded her. The young woman ruled England for 9 days before political machinations accused her of treason and led to her execution on February 12, 1554.

In this work, the painter has depicted the figure of Sir John Brydges, the lieutenant of the Tower who leads the young woman. Lady Jane Grey's outer garments rest on the lap of one of her fainting maids, while the second turns away from the scene. On the right, the executioner waits in silence. A coffin can be seen behind him.

Lady Jane Grey wears a white petticoat and is stabilizing herself on her knees.

There's a classic approach to the design of this work. Jane is at the center of the picture, standing out against a dark background. Moreover, the chiaroscuro highlights her silhouette and draws the eye to her. The color palette is harmonious, allowing Jane to stand out in the foreground.

Paul Delaroche's work is an attempt to reproduce a historical fact. We know today, for example, that the execution took place outdoors, in front of an audience, in the Tower of London.
